I know from recent experience how quickly and unexpectedly a serious illness or injury can occur, and I know the stress it can put on a family. On April 1, 2016, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that had metastatized to her spine and her brain. My siblings and I quickly found ourselves in the role of caregiver to our mother whom had been healthy enough just weeks before to live alone and work her normal schedule as an elementary school teacher. It was a terrible diagnosis for my mother and for our family but we were lucky in this respect; my mother's house was in Lexington, KY and right across the street from an excellent hospital. She was able to receive care at a hospital that was a 2 minute drive away. Not everyone is that lucky. In a time of profound upheaval, my mom and the rest of our family still had the comfort of home.
I have tremendous respect for the services that the Fisher House Foundation offers. Offering comfortable (and competely free) accomodations to military families that need to travel in order for a family member to receive the proper medical care is, to put it modestly, incredibly admirable and heartwarming. The fact that they are offering this to military families, a demographic that on the whole has sacrificed far more than the average American family, is even further proof of the great work that this organization is doing. The goodwill that the Fisher House Foundation spreads by providing comfort and making things easier during the emotionally trying time of a loved one's illness or injury has spurred me to action, and so I have set up a fundraiser to help their cause.
I will be riding a bicycle from Key West to New Orleans. How will that help me raise money for the Fisher House Foundation? Well I will be arriving in Key West on May 20th and then starting my bike ride (hopefully) on Sunday, May 21st. However, I HAVE SET A GOAL OF FUNDRAISING $12,000 FOR THE FISHER H0USE FOUNDATION AND I CANNOT BEGIN THE TRIP UNTIL I HAVE RAISED THAT AMOUNT. I WILL NOT LEAVE KEY WEST UNTIL I HAVE RAISED $12,000 FOR THE FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION. I have a hammock and will be camping as I make my way from Key West to New Orleans, but seeing as I cannot begin the trip until I have raised my stated amount, I will be stuck camping in Key West if WE can not come up with at least $12,000 for this great organization before May 21st. Please save me from being stranded in Key West with little more than a hammock and a bicycle. Help to ease the stress that is inherent in a loved one's hospital stay and give these military families the comfort of home by making a donation to the Fisher House Foundation through this fundraising page.
